Utah and San Diego are both coming off 1-1 draws in week one of the 2025 NWSL season. Utah found itself in a close 1-1 draw against Bay FC last Saturday. Bianca St. George scored in the 12th minute for the Royals, which was assisted by goalkeeper Mandy McFlynn. We don't see too many goalkeeper assists! It's only the fourth in NWSL history, FYI. Bay FC scored a goal of their own in the 43rd minute though, and neither team would break through in the second half for the win. The draw is already giving better hope vibes for the Royals, who started on a losing record in 2024.
The Royals have yet to defeat San Diego. The last meeting last September ended in a 2-1 loss at home. But San Diego is a different team this year, finding themselves rebuidling after Alex Morgan retired, Naomi Girma moved to Chelsea, and Jaedyn Shaw and Abby Dahlkemper are both playing with different NWSL teams. The Wave also are under the direction of a new coach, Jonas Eidevall.
