Player Ratings: CS Herediano 0-0 Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake’s first CONCACAF Champions Cup match featured an array of middling and mediocre performances.

Player Ratings: CS Herediano 0-0 Real Salt Lake
  • Cabral (GK) — 5.5: He was never particularly tested. Tended to play long, for better or worse.
  • Hidalgo (RB) — 5.5: Played a conservative game, and I think that had a knock-on effect with the wingers. Did fine, though. No concerns.
  • Henry (CB) — 4: Very poor passing from Henry who will have hoped for a better debut. Put RSL in hot water multiple times, once with a foul in a dangerous position and in others by struggling to build possession, opting most frequently for a clearance.
  • Vera (CB, off 89’) — 4.5: Did marginally better than his partner, but even when RSL had set piece opportunities, he failed to show the danger he provided last year. His passing was terrible, though. Nightmarish stuff.
  • Katranis (LB, off 18’) — N/A: After suffering a ball to the head from a shot, Katranis came off in the 18th minute, despite continuing on for several minutes after the incident. He was later seen arguing with who appeared to be a team physician. Wasn’t on long enough to receive a rating.
  • Ojeda (CM) — 6: Ojeda and Eneli generally had the middle of the park locked down in a more defensive role.
  • Eneli (CM) — 7: A bit touch and go in the first half, but grew into the match and the captain’s armband. As the match wore on, Eneli grew, and he was one of a few players actively trying to win the match in the dying minutes. A solid performance for his first competitive match with the captain’s arbmand.
  • Marczuk (RW, off 59’) — 4.5: Struggled to get involved. Had very little impact on proceedings.
  • Brook (CAM, off 59’) — 4.5: Offered very little in what was clearly an uncomfortable role in the center of the park. Did a little better coming out to the wing, but 12 passes in that role in 59 minutes is not good.
  • Goncalves (LW) — 5: He came alive a little bit in the second half, but a dismal first half and a lack of incisive, well, anything in the attack puts him down on the list. Still, he was the only RSL attacker to register more than one key pass, and his final 15 minutes playing sort of at center forward were better than expected.
  • Ajago (FW, off 75’) — 5.5: Had one clear-cut opportunity one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the first half, but he put it right at him. While he was easily RSL’s best attacking option, that unfortunately didn’t say much about the match.

Substitutes

  • Junqua (LB, on 18’) — 5.5: Lacked Katranis’s attacking threat down the left, but he nearly scored with a nice knock-down header late on, which should have led to a further corner. It didn’t, but that’s not Sam’s fault.
  • Gozo (59’) — 6: While active and spry, he didn’t truly move the needle. He’s just 17 and shouldn’t be expected to change games, but he did show a fair bit of promise. Still, he was one of two RSL players in the dying minutes of the match really trying to turn a draw into a win, and that bumps him up a notch in my book.
  • Wolff (59’) — 5.5: Looked a better fit in the middle than Lachlan Brook, who he replaced.
  • Ruiz (75’) — N/A: Didn’t quite get enough time to get a ranking, but it was so nice to see Pablo Ruiz on the field again. It’s been far too long. He had a few good moments and didn’t look afraid to get into a physical battle, which is so important after basically two years of injuries.
  • Glad (89’) — N/A: Not on long enough for a rating.
