Here we go, Utah Royals (1-5-1, 4 pts, 14th NWSL) are on the road, the start of a three-match road trip where they will face the San Diego Wave (2-3-1, 7 pts, 10th NWSL) in a mid-week game.
What we’re watching
Every week, it's really the same, how does the young Utah team bounce back from another loss? They have yet to win since their victory over the North Carolina Courage on March 22nd. Since then, the Royals have dropped to the bottom of the table and continue to struggle in the final third to score meaningful goals. We have seen glimpses of potential with this team. Against Angel City last Friday in the 2-1 loss, Utah had more shots (13-5) and shots on goal (8-5) than the LA-based team. The addition of Amandine Henry has brought experience to the midfield, and she has brought an improvement in vision and dictating control and tempo.
The game in San Diego will be a tough challenge for the Royals, but the Wave are coming off a 2-1 loss in Seattle and will be without center back Kristen McNabb, who received a red card against the Reign. The Wave will also be without key players Abby Dahlkemper, Naomi Girma, Sofia Jakobsson, and Alex Morgan, who are all out with an injury, and this could be significant for the Royals to potentially pick up a win.
