The Utah Royals (1-3-0, 3 pts, 13th NWSL) are on the road at Racing Louisville (0-0-4, 4 pts, 9th NWSL), hoping to get past a two-game losing streak. Utah started 0-1 on their away games after a disappointing loss at the Washington Spirit, losing 2-1 on Sunday, March 31.
What we’re watching
Utah has lost three out of four games this season and appear to still be trying figure out their attack and how to produce results. Against Orlando, the struggle was real, relying on long balls past the midfield to the forwards, but it often did not result in anything. According to Field of Vision on X, Utah produced the 10th lowest xG in a single game in NWSL history.
It was another reminder that this is still a young Utah team, learning to play together in a highly competitive league. Utah needs to add experience and depth to their roster, and they did just that as they signed New Zealand midfielder Macey Leigh Fraser to a three-year contract with an option for a fourth from Wellington Phoenix of the Australian A-League. Fraser is expected to make an immediate impact with her physical and technical abilities, and she comes to Utah with three goals in the 2023-24 season. Fraser also has five international caps for the New Zealand National Team. She will, of course, not be available for the game in Louisville as her international visa is pending, but her signing is a step in the right direction.
Utah faces a Louisville team still trying to earn their first win of the season. They appear to have a stingy defense, allowing only four goals in four games, two of them clean sheets, holding the Houston Dash and San Diego Wave FC scoreless. Racing Louisville will not make it easy for Utah's struggling attack and will need to find a way, beyond the long balls, to produce anything significant.
Score Prediction
Last week's game was rough. Ally Sentnor can't carry an entire team, and while she may potentially get a goal in Louisville, this game looks to be a 1-1 draw.
